Linear programming on the Stiefel manifold

Linear programming on the Stiefel manifold (LPS) is studied for the first time. It aims at minimizing a linear objective function over the set of all pp-tuples of orthonormal vectors in Rn{\mathbb R}^n satisfying kk additional linear constraints. Despite the classical polynomial-time solvable case k=0k=0, general (LPS) is NP-hard. According to the Shapiro-Barvinok-Pataki theorem, (LPS) admits an exact semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation when p(p+1)/2≤n−kp(p+1)/2\le n-k, which is tight when p=1p=1. Surprisingly, we can greatly strengthen this sufficient exactness condition to p≤n−kp\le n-k, which covers the classical case p≤np\le n and k=0k=0. Regarding (LPS) as a smooth nonlinear programming problem, we reveal a nice property that under the linear independence constraint qualification, the standard first- and second-order {\it local} necessary optimality conditions are sufficient for {\it global} optimality when p+1≤n−kp+1\le n-k

Dynamic analysis of reciprocating compressor system with translational clearance and time-varying load

Dynamic behavior of reciprocating compressor system, with translational clearance between the crosshead and guide under time-varying cylinder load, is investigated. In order to analyze the dynamic response of the system with translational clearance, a novel nonlinear dynamic model is established based on the Lagrangian approach. The numerical solution of the dynamic equation is calculated by the Runge-Kutta method. The results show that the translational clearance has a great effect on the reciprocating compressor, and the more the translational clearance, the great the influence. Moreover, the phase space of the crosshead reveals that the reciprocating compressor system with translational clearance has chaotic characteristics

A multicomponent assembly approach for the design of deep desulfurization heterogeneous catalysts

Deep desulfurization is a challenging task and global efforts are focused on the development of new approaches for the reduction of sulfur-containing compounds in fuel oils. In this work, we have proposed a new design strategy for the development of deep desulfurization heterogeneous catalysts. Based on the adopted design strategy, a novel composite material of polyoxometalate (POM)-based ionic liquid-grafted layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was synthesized by an exfoliation/grafting/assembly process. The structural properties of the as-prepared catalyst were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TG, NMR, XPS, BET, SEM and HRTEM. The heterogeneous catalyst exhibited high activity in deep desulfurization of DBT (dibenzothiophene), 4,6-DMDBT (4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene) and BT (benzothiophene) at 70 °C in 25, 30 and 40 minutes, respectively. The catalyst can be easily recovered and reused at least ten times without obvious decrease of its catalytic activity. Such excellent sulfur removal ability as well as the cost efficiency of the novel heterogeneous catalyst can be attributed to the rational design, where the spatial proximity of the substrate and the active sites, the immobilization of ionic liquid onto the LDHs via covalent bonding and the recyclability of the catalyst are carefully considered

Factors Motivating the Customers’ SNS Brand Page Behavior: Comparison between China and Korea

Purpose – The wide spread and usage of SNS brand pages in companies has renovated the brand strategy in the new era. Embedded in an organically grown network of social ties, SNS brand pages show great differences from the ordinary online brand community. Called upon by the new research opportunities, this paper investigates the motivating factors (functional benefits, hedonic benefits, economic benefits and intrinsic benefits) influencing customers’ SNS brand page behavior (participation/commitment) in the cultural context of China and Korea, so as to provide meaningful implications to the companies’ effective use of SNS brand pages, and help global companies in their development of brand strategies for the two countries. Design/methodology/approach – In all, 407 Chinese and 384 Korean SNS brand page users were surveyed to conduct the above research agenda by structural equation modeling. Findings –prior motivating factor constructs are valid in influencing the consumers’ participation in and commitment to SNS brand pages in both countries, yet with dissimilarities in the significance and strength. Information seeking is not significantly correlated with the SNS brand page behavior in China, and convenience is found not correlate in Korea. Brand reputation in China and reward in Korea are the most influential factors of participation behavior. Interaction plays an important role in affecting commitment behavior in both countries. Participation has a positive impact on purchase intention in two countries, but only Chinese samples’ commitment has a positive impact on purchase intention

Dynamic analysis of slider-crank mechanism with clearance fault

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the slider-crank mechanism with clearance fault is investigated. The revolute joint with clearance is equivalent to a virtual massless rod, and then the dynamic equation of the crank slider mechanism with clearance is established by the Lagrangian method. In addition, a three-dimensional dynamic model of the crank slider mechanism with clearance is also established by ADAMS. The numerical results show that the clearance affects the displacement and velocity response of the crank-slider mechanism in a weak way, but influences the acceleration response of the mechanism in a significant manner. Due to the existence of the clearance, the revolute joint of the mechanism produces a rub-impact phenomenon, and the larger the clearance, the greater the impact strength. During the rub-impact process, there are three kinds of motion states of separation, collision and contact occur
